Invoice with VAT: Complete calculation guide

VAT (Value Added Tax) is an indirect tax that applies to most sales of goods and services. Learn how to calculate it and include it in your invoices.

What is VAT?

VAT is a tax collected by businesses on their sales and paid to the state. It is included in the TTC (All Taxes Included) selling price.

Important note: Self-employed persons and some businesses may be exempt from VAT under certain conditions.

How to calculate VAT

VAT calculation is simple:

Calculation example

HT price: 1 000,00 €
VAT (20%): 200,00 €
Total TTC: 1 200,00 €

Formula: TTC = HT × (1 + VAT rate). For example, €1000 HT with 20% VAT = €1200 TTC.

Different VAT rates

In France, several VAT rates apply depending on the type of product or service:

20%
Standard rate (majority of goods and services)
10%
Reduced rate (restaurants, transport, certain medicines)
5.5%
Super reduced rate (essential products)
